What area do I cover?
I live in Steventon, Oxfordshire and cover the nearby towns of Abingdon, Didcot and Wantage and surrounding villages in South Oxfordshire and the Vale of the White Horse. I am also happy to travel further afield including Oxford, Wallingford and beyond, at an extra cost to cover my time and travel expenses. Since the restrictions imposed by COVID-19 I have fully adapted to working by remote access where possible which means I can also tutor and advise people outside my usual geographical area.
How much does it cost?
£20 for up to 30 minutes - for remote sessions only.
£35 for a 1-hour session. This is the minimum time for a personal visit.
Additional time charged pro rata.
**One session FREE if you pay for 4 one-hour sessions up-front. So you get 5 lessons for £140 **
These costs are for distances up to 8 miles from Steventon. For visits at distances over 8 miles (when cycling becomes too hard!) I charge an extra £1 per mile per visit.
How do you book an appointment?
Just phone me, email me or use the contact form on my ‘Get in touch‘ page. I generally work during the day, Monday to Friday, but can do evenings or weekends if necessary. Most of my clients like to book only a week or two in advance so I can usually find you a time quite soon.
How does remote access work and is it safe?
I have a remote access tool that lets me see your screen and control the mouse and keyboard too. This works on Windows computers, Macs, iPads, iPhones, and most Android phones and tablets (for iPhones & iPads I can only see the screen, I can't control them). This is wonderful for sorting out most problems because I can see exactly what you see (although if your problem is that you don't have internet access then it won't work and I will have to talk you through a possible solution or come to your home).
We agree on a time to work together, I set up the link on my computer and let you know what to do on your computer or device to let me have access. The most successful sessions are where we also talk on the phone or via a video chat.
It is not possible for me to access your computer or device without you being there, making it very safe. No-one else could use the same method to gain unwanted access to your device unless you actively allow them.
How much time do you need?
This very much depends on your requirements and is best answered by examples:
Mrs K of Sutton Courtenay upgraded to a new phone to replace a rather old one. I set it up for her, transferring apps and photos from the old phone, and then gave her a tutorial on how to get the most out of it. This took 2 hours.
Mr K of Drayton started with very little computer knowledge and had a course of 5 lessons over a 3-week period to learn the basics of Windows, how to use email, internet browsing and searching, and the basics of Microsoft Word.
Mr S of Long Wittenham had one hour to learn how to take photos from his camera and use them in eBay adverts
Mrs T of Kennington needed help with her printer, and a general health check and tidy-up of her rather old computer to improve its performance. It took 1½ hours.
Ms S of Steventon wanted to update her office skills for a forthcoming job interview and had an intensive week where she learned the fundamentals of Excel and Powerpoint. She had 5 hours of tuition, with lots of practice in between lessons
Mrs D of Marcham has ongoing visits once a month to gradually expand her knowledge and answer any questions that arise between lessons.
